Mahindra Bolero and Bolero Neo Bold Edition: Mahindra has just introduced Bold Edition versions of the much-loved Bolero and Bolero Neo SUV models to add a fresh new look to these utility workhorses without compromising on their mechanical performance. The special editions, that were mentioned on Mahindra’s official website last week, include visual changes and added equipment while retaining their rugged nature that has garnered them a cult status in the Indian auto industry.
The Bold Edition treatment has been eagerly-anticipated for the Bolero line-up, which has been needing a proper update for quite some time now, hence, this refresh was quite a welcome surprise for fans and prospects both. These special editions feature blacked-out exterior bits and some upmarket touches on the inside, and they sure as hell inject fresh air into Mahindra’s old SUV line-up, until the next-gen models arrive in a few years.
Bold Edition Design Upgrades
The Bolero Neo Bold Edition comes in a dashing Napoli Black exterior shade that makes it look more premium and less utilitarian. All outside chrome has been blacked out for a premium look—there is nothing to stand between you and your machine. The dark chrome features are combined with the roof rail, which escorts the sporty spirit of the SUV without sacrificing its functionality.
The black interiors of the cabin with darker upholstery give the car a premium feel. Along with it, Mahindra has also added a few thoughtful accessories such as black neck cushions and pillows on a comfort kit, enhancing the inside experience for the driver and passengers alike. Seatbelt covers match the all-black interior for a completely stealthy look in the cabin.
In the case of the regular Bolero Bold Edition, it is the trending Diamond White colour with unique graphics on the side and door panels. It sports a bold new all-black front grille and comes with dark grey vertical slats with a chrome finish Mahindra logo. Blacked-out fog lamps on the metal finish black panels (with yellow graphics) on the front bumper also compliment the utilitarian looks.
Mechanical Specifications and Behavior
Powering both versions are the same power plants as the regular versions of the two models. The Bolero Neo Bold Edition still gets the trusted 1.5 liter, mHawk diesel engine which churns out 98.56bhp at 3750 rpm and 260Nm of torque between 1750-2250 rpm. This engine comes paired with a five-speed manual transmission, offering the same reliability that Bolero Neo buyers are accustomed to.
The regular Bolero Bold Edition features the 1493cc diesel engine that delivers 75bhp at 3600 rpm and 210Nm of torque at 1600-2200 rpm. Just like a reliable workhorse that refuses to get tired, this powertrain has been rock solid through the years over numerous terrains and circumstances. Both models retain the rugged construction and all of the performance traits which make the Bolero range a popular choice among commercial vehicle users.
The Bolero Neo’s rear-wheel-drive architecture along with Multi Terrain Technology ensures that the Mahindra continues to be a dependable performer no matter where it goes. That’s because like the mountain goat, the Bolero Neo’s chassis (based on the Scorpio) handles even the sketchiest of roads with aplomb and none of that fear even needs to make it behind the wheel of the BNeo.
Feature Additions and Technologies
Bold Edition models do throw in some nice extras to the feature list. For the Bolero Neo Bold Edition, the rear view camera adds to the safety and convenience when parking. This addition is a response to one of the few criticisms of the previous models and makes the SUV more in step with the times.
The existing technology remains the same on both models. While the Bolero Neo still gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (only on the top variant), cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, and keyless entry. The regular Bolero Bold Edition carries over its basic Bluetooth-enabled music system and digital info cluster, which houses info such as current mileage, trip info and door status.
Safety kit continues to be the same as before, with the Bolero Neo getting dual front airbags, rear parking sensors with reverse assist, and ISOFIX child mounts. The Bolero Neo may have scored one star in the Global NCAP crash tests, but the body-on-frame design is still the robustness that customers in this space demand.
Market Positioning and Competing Offerings
The Bolero range has a special place among Indian passenger vehicles. The Bolero Neo doesn’t have any direct rivals, but can be considered as a low-tech, but robust, alternative to monocoque sub-4m SUVs like the Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and even Mahindra’s own XUV300. The Bold Edition derivatives only reinforce this, as they bring a new look to the already capable options.
While the Bolero Neo is priced between Rs 9.95 lakh and Rs 12.15 lakh (ex-showroom), the Bolero Neo Bold Edition will likely be offered at a slight premium, although it will offer more value thanks to its cosmetic updates and extra features. These special editions — which also serve as a replacement for the Bolero’s top-end variant — are the equivalent of your dependable friend showing up with a new haircut but the same trustworthy persona.
The timing of these special editions is also not coincidental, with Mahindra getting ready the next-gen Bolero, which should be launched between 2026 and 2027. The next-gen model will be underpinned by Mahindra’s new-generation ICE architecture (codename U171) that has seen a substantial investment of over Rs 2,000 crore. Until that happens, these Bold Edition models should keep the current lineup fresh.
Prospective of Bolero Range
As much as the Bold Editions offer a breath of fresh air for the current lineup, Mahindra has big plans for the Bolero going forward. The new Bolero is likely to get a major design, interior and engine options upgrade. It could either be a new 2.2L turbo diesel engine from the Thar which produces 132bhp and 320Nm, or the 1.5L turbo diesel unit that is available in the Marazzo.
These changes come in anticipation of the slew of new models Mahindra will be launching over the next six years – 16 new models, which will include 9 ICE SUVs and 7 electric SUVs. The next-gen Mahindra Bolero will be in the same vein and the platform destined for the U171 will spawn a trio of new Mahindra SUVs that will have a combined target of 1.5 lakh units per annum.
For the time being, the Bold Edition versions rejuvenate the existing Bolero range – providing customers with a refresh option that marries the well-known dependability of these SUVs with a newer design and added features. Much like a good book gets reissued with a brand new cover, these special editions retain the very best of what we love about the Bolero range, but with chic, skilful refreshes that retain its appeal in a crowded market.
