Upcoming Electric cars in India: The Indian automotive scene is seeing a revolution of sorts with the strongest wind blowing in the direction of electric cars, and the family man in particular, now having a lot more to choose from, more than ever before! With fuel costs on the rise and charging facilities getting better around the country, car manufacturers are in competition to churn out more practical electric cars to suit a bigger flock. Three key players – MG, Kia and Mahindra – are getting ready to roll out their 7-seater electric vehicles in the months ahead, all of which have different things to offer the market.
These impending unveilings mark the turning point of India’s EV segment, that recorded the sale of over 15 lakh EVs across segments in FY 24. That spike in demand is being booted not just by higher fuel prices but also by a greater range of models, better charging infrastructure, and generous government incentives to accelerate EV adoption. Below, we delve deeper into these three family-friendly electric vehicles that promise to offer a mix of space, sustainability, and advanced technology.
MG M9 EV:
MG says the electric MPV will take luxury in its segment to the next level when it goes on sale in June 2025. This enormous car (it’s actually 5,207mm long) makes you feel very grand and imposing on the road — kind of like wearing a tailored three-piece suit in the land of T-shirts and trainers. MG has opened bookings for the M9 and is taking bookings from its premium ‘Select’ network of dealerships for a nominal booking amount of Rs 51,000.

In contrast to the majority of imported EVs, the M9 will be locally assembled in India through the CKD (completely knocked down) route, which leads to much lower import duties compared to fully built units. This strategy will help MG place the M9 more competitively in the market, and it is likely to be priced between Rs 65 lakh and 75 lakh. Behind the nose – which is free to act as a traditional luggage compartment since the M9 doesn’t need a radiator – there’s a substantial 90kWh battery, along with a front-mounted electric motor. The powertrain offers 241bhp and 350Nm of torque, with a claimed WLTP-certified range of up to 430km from one charge. As far as families worried about safety are concern, the M9 has a solid lineage and has managed to achieve a five-star rating in Euro-NCAP crash tests.

Kia Clavis EV:
After releasing the internal combustion engine model of the Carens Clavis, Kia is releasing the all-electric version of the car in June 2025. The Clavis EV will be India’s first mass-market 7-seater electric vehicle and democratise the segment to a larger number of buyers with an expected price tag of about Rs. 20 lakh.

Speaking exclusively to NDTV Auto, Hardeep S. Brar, Vice President and Head of Marketing & Sales, Kia India confirmed that the electric minivan will be available in two variants. Whether or not this (expected) powertrain is similar to the one that Hyundai offers in its Creta Electric—viz-a-viz a 135bhp electric motor combined with a 42kWh battery —is unknown, but unofficial details seem to suggest as much. It is estimated that this layout will offer an ARAI-certified range of around 390km.
Practicability and spacious interior layout of its ICE sibling is anticipated to be continued with Clavis EV with EV orientated design cues for both exteriors and interiors. As the name suggests, it’s targeted at being a one size fits all solution for the new generation families, promising not to let the comfort and versatility down, with tech such as the Level 2 ADAS suite and 360-degree camera system present to make your life as easy and safe as possible.
Mahindra launches XEV 7e:
The Mahindra XEV 7e follows the trio of 7-seater EVs and is due for a July 2025 arrival. The electric version of the hot-selling XUV700 could be placed in the segment of Rs. 21 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, making it a premium, yet affordable option for bigger families wanting to have an eco-friendly mobility solution.

The XEV 7e, will be underpinned by Mahindra’s new INGLO platform, and is believed to have two battery pack options on offer – a 59kWh and a 79kWh. With these power choices, the all-electric SUV could offer a maximum single-charge range of an estimated 650km—possibly one of the best in its class. This anxiety-busting range would be a game-changer for families thinking of going electric.
In terms of design, there will be little that will differentiate the XEV 7e from the XUV700, except EV-specific changes including new front and rear bumpers, new alloy wheels and a blanked-off grille. On the inside, the cbX will likely have dual-tone upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a multi-screen setup on the dash with a three-screen setup for the infotainment system and the instrument cluster.
Whereas the XEV 9e takes on a coupe-SUV form, the XEV 7e will have a conventional SUV shape, valuing cabin space and capacity, therefore the vehicle is likely to be the most practical one for those with larger families.
